The Sun Always Shines After The Storm

The Sun Always Shines After The StormWe have had the most beautiful weather lately. Yesterday brought blue skies, warm sunshine, and birds a ’chirping. And the flowers, oh my goodness, such vibrant colors in my garden. (I’ll have to get my humming bird feeders out soon!)

Today, however, it is cold, dreary, overcast and windy. It is such a contrast from yesterday, but that is how life is sometimes; sunny and happy one day, cold and dreary the next day. Yesterday, everything was rocking and rolling in your life, and today, your world is in a storm. You ask yourself, “What happened.” Well, life happened. The only real choice you have on such days is, “how do YOU handle the storm?” That decision is going to dictate how bad that storm is going to affect you. Don’t let the “poor me’s” take hold of you, though that’s very easy to do! Don’t allow anyone to add to your storm. Lots of well-meaning people that love you may do this. When I am in a storm and feel the “poor me’s” trying to make a home inside my head, I follow some simple steps:

  1. I find things in my life that I am grateful for. Sometimes they are simple things like, I have a roof over my head, I have a car to drive, and so forth. This helps to remind me that there are others in the world that do not have those items.
  2. I look for someone whose world I can bring a little sunshine into. That takes the focus off of me. It might be paying for the order of the person that is behind me in the drive through. It could be telling the manager of the grocery store about an employee that’s gone above and beyond in helping me. It’s strange how it works, but bringing sunshine into lives of others brings sunshine into my world.

So Bundle up, buckle up, and know that the sun is going to shine again. I am standing on my desk cheering for you.

Looking for New Renters

Looking for New Renters - He can fly!

He can FLY !

I witnessed something amazing yesterday. As I walked onto my back porch there was a baby bird hopping around. It was in its early flying lessons. The baby bird was hopping more than flying.  I went back in the house and for the next 45 minutes I watched as its parents encouraged it. I could almost hear them say “You can do it. I believe in you.” I named the baby, Kevin. Mama bird would fly to a low branch on a shrub as Daddy bird encouraged Kevin from the ground. Slowly but surely, Kevin would take small distance flights. Both parents would make the flight and then go back to Kevin, chirping away “You can do it, I believe in you.”

Finally at the top of the shrub, after many tiny flights of failure and successes, and encouragement from parents, he was ready.  You would think I was his mother, as nervously as I was watching. I found myself saying out loud “You can do it, I believe in you!”

So many times in life, we stop trying after a couple of failures, but we have to get back up and try again. We need to share strength.  When was the last time YOU encouraged someone to fly?

And Kevin? I got to witness his first cross country (yard) flight. He can now fly! I guess I will be looking for new Renters for his birdhouse.

Hope – Even if it’s all you have.

Hope - Even if it's all you have.I heard these words on the radio today as I drove to the grocery store.

“You’re shattered
Like you’ve never been before
The life you knew
In a thousand pieces on the floor
And words fall short in times like these
When this world drives you to your knees
You think you’re never gonna get back
To the you that used to be
Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in.”

We have all been there.  A dark place, trying to just make it to the next day.  The most empowering words for me are, “Tell your heart to beat again.”  That is where it starts, one heartbeat. The heartbeat of one moment, one minute, one hour, and then one day. We made it. And we start again tomorrow. The easy path is to stay where you are.  Fight, fight with a simple heartbeat.  The uglies are going to try to keep you down. Steps are going to be slow, and sometimes even a couple of steps backwards.  Let go of what is behind you and look forward to what is ahead of you. Taking those steps of one heartbeat at a time.

So, tell your heart to beat again, close your eyes and breathe it in!
